Our first experience of a wedding in France has yet to be surpassed, nearly twenty years on. Whilst we flew into the delightful town of Montpellier, other Brits turned up in old MG sportsers that shouldn't have made it Dover, let alone Provence. Whisked off to a large farm some miles away amongst fields of sunflowers and fine wine grapes
and vines, locals buzzed around on old motorbikes, without a crash helmet in sight and the village cafes lazed in early evening sunshine with locals enjoying a coffee and wine outside on dusty roads. Locals insisted on inviting us into their homes to sample home made wines and leaving with a dozen eggs and copious bottles of wine at absurdly cheap prices, we were made to feel at home and welcomed superbly.
The Farm itself had featured on a BBC arts programme, for its dramatic stage built by the owner, married to 60's Parisean model and still stunning and immaculate in the 1990's. The stage was an engineering masterpiece, built into the rocky terrain, like a small italian outdoor opera venue, lit only by a series of mirrors on scaffolding moving at the same speed as the moon, reflecting the moons light directly on the stage consistently and brilliantly. The RSC were due to visit later that year. It was the realisation of one mans dream.
In the gardens beyond were a large outdoor pool, and a woodland bordering the farm land beyond. Barbecues were set into the ground near to the pool and the moon lit the stage perfectly on the night of the wedding. The party went on all night and few had breakfast until late afternoon the following day, with sore heads. In all we were there five days, four nights and I can honestly say, apart from my own of course, it was without doubt the very best wedding I have attended. France had me entranced and hooked! It is a land of sheer breath taking beauty, and it's people are warm, friendly, attractive, perfectly mannered and custodians of the worlds most beautiful language. I'd live there tomorrow at the drop of a hat, but I dont have a house there. So if you have a house in France you feel like giving to the author dont be shy of getting in touch............:)
